Thanks to flummer's response, I have the Sparkfun shield working with an 20x4 lcd display. I'm not using SoftwareSerial. I am using TinyGPS with flummer's modification to the cpp file.
Then use Serial1.begin(4800); and
while(Serial1.available()) // While there is data on the RX pin...
{
int c = Serial1.read(); // load the data into a variable...
if(gps.encode(c)) // if there is a new valid sentence...

getgps(gps); // then grab the data.

Some more information/tests:
I disconnected the hard disk and booted into the BIOS. I watched the real time monitoring of temperature and voltages until the board switched off again - I didn't see any suspicious. Temp was well below 30 degree celsius (86 F).
Without the hard disk I noticed a high pitched sound coming from the board (it's not the PSU because the chassis has an external one). I tried again - the noise is definitely there.
One more observation. When I try to turn on the computer right after it shut down it will not start. When I pull the plug from the PSU and wait some time it will start again (but always shutting off after a few minutes).
I realize that Intel has discontinued support of its Turbo Boost Technology Monitor for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge, the latest version of which was 2.6, but couldn't Intel just create a website called "old stuff: use at your own risk"? Since Intel no longer manufactures desktop boards, this would seem to be a logical move, instead of just closing up shop.

I am sorry you are having this problem. Please note that Mac computers use special and customized drivers so the best option is to contact your Computer Manufacture for them to help you with the correct configuration and drivers for it.

Thanks for your reply, I already spoke with Heidi from Customer Support through email, the problem is the NUC is completely dead, with or without the memory, it’s not the power supply that came with the NUC and it’s not my 3rd party parts that’s broken.
I’ve checked it all and they work, the NUC won’t even power on, with or without the parts in place, when I click the power button nothing happens, there is no LED displaying when I hit the power button.

Something very important I need to tell you is that this is a generic driver, that means that it supposed to work on Intel motherboards only. You can give it a try, but if it does not work it will be necessary to get in touch with your system manufacture since you have an OEM chipset.

I saw those lines once on an Intel motherboard. I sent it to Intel on RMA and they told me the CPU socket was broken.
If I were you, I would go to Control Panel and uninstall Smite and all Intel graphics drivers. I'd reboot and start Windows Update to find the proper Intel graphics driver. I'd reboot once again and poke around to make sure the lines were gone. If the lines were still there, Smite would be innocent, but your PC would be hosed. If not, I'd try to install and run Smite.
If it failed again, I'd repeat all of the above steps except for installing Smite. I'd give up on that and sell it to someone else.

Ah, that would certainly explain it. You'd think things like memory would be fully backward compatible, but often times they aren't.

Glad to help! Of course this isn't technically a "solution", it's a workaround because it requires you to disable a feature that should work. Still, if you don't need the WOL feature this should do it.

We have come up with many BIOS updates that contains many fixes for some issues so it would be important to update the BIOS.
If you have the original version, my best recommendation is to go one by one to the latest so we don’t brick the board.

I am afraid this cable does not work with the Galileo Gen 2 Board. If you see here: https://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-23043, the connector on the board does not match with the pinout of the cable.

Same issue here. Lenovo U430 Touch, all drivers and OS up to date.
Edit: Uninstalling the previous version and installing the new version did the trick.
This will definitely help for Application Log Error. Also there is something wrong with Your KINGSTON usb flash drive
Have You tried modifying memory frequency and then testing Your gfx? (i.e. lowering it to ~1000 or ~1600)
Also can You attach crash log (if available)? (i.e. %SystemRoot%\MEMORY.DMP)
